Modern security features

Credit cards today have several layers of protection:

  • EMV chip instead of insecure magnetic stripe
  • 3D Secure (e.g. Visa Secure, Mastercard Identity Check) for online payments
  • Two-factor authentication via app or SMS
  • Real-time notifications for every transaction

Liability in case of misuse

For unauthorized debits, you are usually only liable up to a maximum of €50 — and only in case of gross negligence. Report loss or theft immediately via the blocking hotline 116 116.

How to protect yourself actively

Beyond the bank's technical safeguards, a large part of security depends on your own behaviour. Enable push notifications in the card app so you are informed of every transaction immediately and can spot unauthorised bookings early. Choose a unique PIN that you never write down and do not reuse for other cards or accounts.

Be cautious with public Wi-Fi: avoid entering sensitive banking data over unsecured networks. Recognise phishing attempts by the fact that banks never ask for complete card details, a PIN or a TAN by email or SMS. If your card is lost or stolen, block it immediately via the app or the central blocking hotline.

Paying securely online

When shopping online, only buy on reputable sites and always check that the connection is encrypted via HTTPS. For one-off or higher-risk purchases, many providers offer virtual single-use cards whose details become invalid after payment — preventing anyone from misusing the card number later.

Also set an online limit or a daily limit for card payments. Many card apps allow you to temporarily block the card for specific transaction types such as foreign payments or online orders, and re-enable them when needed. This granularity gives you maximum control over your spending behaviour.
